Walking through Andheri in the Shadow of Deaf

i spent the morning following Bala as he delivered around Andheri East today. Instead of traveling on the buses he told me that he preferred to walk. He signed to me that walking is much faster because he knows all the secret shortcuts around his delivery area. In no time we were cutting through crumbled brick backyards and narrow grassy lanes, jumping from one main road to the next. I was very confused to where i was. Along the way we talked about the monorail that seems to be obnoxiously blocking traffic on every road in Andheri. I told him that I hope it will help the traffic situation. He said its been going on for so long and causes a lot of dust.

Our first delivery was an official bank letter to some offices next to a car mechanic. Next we delivered some Tehelka magazines to Fever 104 FM Radio station. It surprised me that we were delivering to this famous radio station every week and i never knew about it. It makes sense given Tehelka’s reading audience. The admin staff was super polite and very pleased to see him as they do every week. There is something nice about a deaf person delivering magazines to a radio station. We also went to some new fancy offices including one HSBC Direct building to deliver new 2011 diaries for one of our clients. Bala was showing me how impressive the building was, pointing out the new technology, the nice lifts, ceilings and floors. The journey back to office was also surprsingly swift as we followed his imagined route of unmarked back lanes and quiet roads.

It’s been a while since I traveled in the shadow of one of our guys. It was was nice to be reminded of their awesomeness.
